National Steel Car was once a dominant business in Canada, being a leading manufacturer of railroad freight cars. However, it would suffer as the Great Depression began, falling from it’s throne. While it would survive through the decades, and even find success, it still wouldn’t achieve its prior reputation. At least, that was until Gregory Aziz entered the scene.
Gregory J Aziz was born in Ontario in the year 1949 and studied economics at the University of Western Ontario. His career began at Affiliated Foods in 1971, which was owned by his family, and after working in New York City during the 1980’s and 1990’s, he was able to purchase National Steel Car. From this point of purchase, Greg Aziz worked to transform the company into a leader of the industry.
Under Gregory J Aziz’s leadership, the company has expanded greatly. Focusing on the company’s decades of experience, along with its already strong engineering capabilities, and investing considerable human and capital investments, the National Steel Car found new success. When Gregory J Aziz bought the company in 1994, its manufacturing capability allowed the company to produce 3,500 freight cars per year. By 1999, the manufacturing capability was expanded to allow the production of 12,000 cars. While the company was tripling its manufacturing capability, it also heavily expanded its employee population. In that same period, the number of employees went from 600 to around 3,000. Today, the company manufactures and supplies thousands of freight cars every year for a variety of buyers, mainly railway operators and commercial rail operators, in both Canada and the United States of America. The company is not only one of the few remaining Canadian companies in that industry, but it is a leader in it. National Steel Car holds the unique honor of being the only North American company of its type that is certified ISO 9001:2008, and it has held this certification for almost two decades.
However, Gregory J Aziz did not just focus on the economic success of the National Steel Car company, but also his community. On a personal, Greg Aziz and his wife sponsor the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, and the company has sponsored or sponsors a variety of local and national organizations, including Theatre Aquarius, the Hamilton Opera, and United Way. The company also has an annual food drive that involves thousands of employees.
